About Upsurge
Protect the capital.Then compound it.
Our philosophy
That order is not a slogan; it is the whole job. We were founded in 2025 by investors who spent the prior decade managing money through India’s cycles, and we built Upsurge to do one thing without compromise, preserve what is entrusted to us first, and grow it patiently second.
Principles
What we hold to.
- 01
Downside first
We define what we can lose before we think about what we can make. A loss avoided compounds as surely as a gain earned, and it costs nothing to recover from.
- 02
Thesis, not narrative
Every position is backed by primary research and a written thesis. A rising price is not a reason, and a good story is not a substitute for the work.
- 03
Patient, then decisive
Most days the right move is to wait. When the market hands us a clear mistake, we act quickly and with conviction. Stillness is what makes the speed possible.
How we think
Ready, not busy.
Markets are efficient often enough that genuine mispricing is rare. So most of the time we do very little, reading, researching, and holding cash without apology, and we are comfortable being judged on that patience.
Every so often the market hands out an obvious mistake: a business mispriced by fear, forced selling, or plain inattention. Those moments are brief. Because the work is already done and the discipline is already in place, we can move on them quickly and decisively while others are still forming a view. We are not trying to be busy. We are trying to be ready.
What governs a position
We read the cash a business actually produces, not the version dressed up to flatter.
We are sceptical of numbers that need footnotes to look good. “Adjusted” this, “normalised” that, earnings before the bad parts, when a figure has been engineered to impress, we treat it as a warning rather than a metric. What survives our scrutiny is simple and durable: real cash, a balance sheet that can take a punch, and a price that gives us margin for being wrong.
Our discipline
What we will not do.
We do not own the flavour of the day. Chasing whatever is rising, on the assumption it will keep rising, is not a strategy, it is a queue, and the people at the front are the only ones paid. We would rather miss a rally than mistake momentum for a thesis.
Where we use derivatives, we use them conservatively and with risk defined in advance. We are not in the business of buying lottery tickets and calling it a view. Every position carries a downside we have measured and accepted before any capital is committed, which is precisely what lets us stay calm, and decisive, when others can’t.
“The first rule is to avoid the unrecoverable mistake. Everything else is a matter of patience.”
Why we exist
The opposite of chasing the move.
Most capital in India chases the move. We built Upsurge to do the opposite, to protect first, to act only when the odds are plainly in our favour, and to compound quietly for a handful of investors who share the temperament. It is the way we manage our own money, and it is the only way we know how to manage yours.
